I’ve truly loved spending time on the computer since I was very young. Like many others my age, I had both a small portion of childhood without the internet, but I also very much grew up on the internet. I’ve long used the computer for creative uses — from a young age I spent time doing what I can only now classify as early forms of graphic design.

I knew as a teenager I wanted to study art + design, and the discovery of “communication design” (my degree) felt like the perfect combination of my innate sense of structure and organization blended with just enough creativity and art. During design school I was a designer, not an artist. Over the years I’ve learned not to make such a harsh differentiation between the two, aided by the fact that my partner is certifiably both an artist, and designer. I still call myself as a designer but I know I have an innate creative self because I am and always have been driven by visual inspiration and creation.

Many of my ideas begin here, on the computer. I find it easy to start ideas digitally because it’s a place I feel comfortable. Sometimes I still need to scribble something on paper, but I love the ever-evolving nature of creating something digital. Whether it’s playing with designs in a figma file with a big open visual work space, or in a word document where I can move paragraphs around and edit, this is often where I start.

In the last few years, I’ve had the really full circle moments as I start “new” hobbies that I had as a child. One of which is knitting, which feels like a perfect place to start talking about the involvement of digital experience into my very tangible, not digital hobbies. I picked up knitting again a couple years ago and my grandma (who taught me to knit a long time ago) told me to sign up for an account on Ravelry — a huge online resource for knitting. I started documenting my projects and very quickly learned the benefit of keeping track of my process as a way to help me learn, and also to share with other beginners like myself.

Right away I started needing a space to keep track of the menial things during a project like counting rows, or noting down mistakes and areas of confusion. This started on paper when I printed out my first pattern and I scribbled notes in the margins, I turned to apple notes when I realized I wanted it synced to my phone and my iPad, and then when I wanted it to be organized as I often do with many things, I created a little project database in Anytype. I made a new ‘type’ called Knitting Project, and attached some properties like links, a status, dates, yarn details, etc. A lot of the same information I attach to a project on Ravelry, but the rest of the page for each project is just a scratchpad for anything. From my thoughts about yarn choice, color deliberation, or simply keeping track of how many rows I’ve done at any given part in a project, anything lives in here.

When I finish a project and I go to update my Ravelry account where I think I have 2 friends, I like to attach as much information and tag it to the pattern I followed. I have benefitted so much in the past from seeing other people’s learnings and notes on their versions of patterns I’ve used, and I hope to someone else in the future.

Another (entirely) new hobby for me this year is gardening. I have been absolutely blessed to live in a place where not only do I have the space to grow things and an abundance of sunlight, but I am also lucky to live with my partner’s grandmother who is an incredibly valuable resource. When I started researching what I wanted to grow, what I could grow, and what actually felt reasonable for my first season, I quickly needed a place to start keeping track of things. I remember starting to sketch some things out on paper but the moment I wanted the ability to move things around I jumped into my beloved app, figma (the app I use every day for work). After I outlined the space I had, I downloaded pngs of the things I wanted to plant, and then I started arranging things into my planter spaces. In a big open canvas I could move things around so that companions sat together, and I could group plants with similar lighting and water needs. Before I even went to the garden center or ordered seeds, I shared my plan to my garden advisor, and she gave me some advice so it was easy to move things around.

Once I actually had all my supplies and seeds on hand, my garden plan came with me outside so I planted everything in the right place, and I used it to keep track of what I had actually planted, and what I was waiting to be planted next when it got warmer. When sprouts popped up and I forgot what I planted where, I referred back to my garden layout.

It’s been months since this and I have not opened my garden figma file in a while because now everything is in the ground and a lot has changed since my initial plan, but I know I’ll come back to this place in a future season when I'm once again planning what I want to grow. Using figma for non-work, fun projects, is an absolute joy.

As a girl on the computer as a teenager I’ve had a Pinterest account for a long time, perhaps too long. My clothing board has far too many pins, but it has served as a tool to stay inspired and follow what I like. Of course as a person online I am influenced by a lot, but my favourite fashion inspiration comes from this board. I’ve known how to sew since I was little, similar to knitting it was a significant hobby of mine throughout my younger years, but dropped off as I got older and had less time for recreational crafting. In the winter, knitting has scratched the itch I have to use my skills to build on my dream wardrobe, but it’s summer now and I live in the literal desert, so it’s really not the time to knit with fuzzy textiles. I pulled out my sewing machine recently and started playing around, and successfully completed my first official project, a wrap skirt from the pattern maker puff + pencil — can’t recommend them enough, amazing unique and stylish patterns.

Similarly to my journey with knitting, I am starting to follow a similar protocol for sewing projects to keep track of my learnings and especially when I begin trying to create my own garments without following a pattern I think I’ll use this space more. I also have been using figma for a more visual-based inspiration workspace, where I will drop reference images, and add color swatches to get myself inspired. I’m still early in my journey with sewing, so I have yet to cast off many independent projects, but this kind of dreaming and ideation really motivates me. I save inspiration all around, on pinterest, instagram, tik tok, are.na, but when ideas start to feel more real (or possible), I can move them into my exploration file and get myself one step closer to creating what I want to create.

The fact that many of my creative ideas for these analog hobbies happens on the computer for me is to be expected — those who know me or have read my substacks know that I deeply care about digital tools and how they can improve and impact our lived experiences.

I also believe so wholeheartedly in having hobbies as well, and as much as I don’t bat an eye at spending most of my day on my computer and my phone, I do truly value time spent doing offline things. I love to cook, spend time outdoors, and create things — but technology has improved many of my hobbies in ways that I am so grateful for.

I hope some of the ways I use technology to augment these very offline and tangible crafts resonates with some of you. We all have different hobbies and activities that we do with our own two hands and the processes in our brains, I think a lot of this is very transferable. In a world where conversations around the impacts of technology is extremely nuanced, I am specifically floating in the happy space where positive technology is here to help us <3

It’s been a while! Through travel and general life busyness sometimes the distance between me and my substack grows and grows until the gap feels so big that it’s hard to cross until I remind myself that it’s not that serious — just write something!

Its still techincally spring but here in the okanagan we’ve had regular temperatures above 30 and only a few sparing bits of rain and cool nights. I’ve watched cody’s grandma’s garden absolutely spring to life, every day I walk through the paths I notice something new that seemingly appeared overnight — like magic. I have new rituals of going outside and checking on my garden in the morning and getting some sunlight, and then going out after the sun starts to go down and do my watering.

Hot days call for cool things to eat and drink that don’t take a lot of high-temperature cooking. This is especially relevant me in our tiny home, and I find myself going through a pretty typical seasonal change where I really start craving refreshing things. Simultaneously life has been fairly busy so I haven’t been doing as much extravagant cooking, instead keeping things simple and quick.

tahini noodles + grated frozen cucumber

Theres almost nothing better to eat for a nice cold lunch to me than a perfectly sauced cold noodle. Maybe a really good sandwich could be a top contender. I desperately miss this very specific cold noodle dish with shrimp and shiso that I had as many times as I could at ohayo cafe in montreal before we moved. Something I’d really like to recreate sometime.

I recently bought some really good tahini so naturally I’ve been making a lot of tahini sauces. Tahini sauce is so forgiving, some citrus, a few more acidic things, some soy sauce, a bit of water to thin, and many ways to spice it up with grated garlic and ginger or other micelaneous items in the pantry. I recently picked up some perilla seed oil that I’ve been using in place of sesame oil from time to time. I’ve been eating this tahini sauce on cold noodles, but also as a dipping sauce for sliced veggies.

The special ingredient here is grated frozen cucumber!! I cant remember where I saw this, probably a tiktok if I’m being honest. Microplane the frozen cucumber as the last finishing touch on your noodles, and be generous. It adds a bit of chill to the noodles and a touch of cucumber flavour. Makes me reminisce about making pan con tomate last summer obsessively during peak tomato season but that time gets closer and closer by the day! I hope to be drowning in tomatoes this summer if all goes according to plan.

I recently started making a lot of tofu salads (credit to my mom for the reminder that they exist and rock!) and in a slightly adjacent jump I’ve also been eating a lot of quick bowls of rice with some sort of creamy fish salad, a bit of marinated cucumber and toppings. This comes together really quickly on a busy day as long as I have rice prepped in the fridge or frozen. I’ll crack open a can of some kind of tinned fish (I usually have to end up giving henry a taste) and add a generous amount of japanese mayo, siracha, some sesame oil and a splash of soy and a chopped up green onion. This over a portion of rice, chopped herbs, and cucumber salad that I’ve had prepped in the fridge. A half an avocado is always welcome here!

A recent trip to the farmers market sent me home with some garlic scapes. I look forward to these every year. I’ll chop these raw and put them on as a topping to almost anything like an herb, they’re great grilled & roasted, but this week I whipped up a scrappy pesto with a bunch of random things I had on hand, no basil. Not that I am a basil hater, but sometimes I crave a pesto that really tastes more…earthy.

Chopped up my garlic scapes, and added an unknown amount of olive oil of course, parlsey, garlic, fresh mint, lemon juice, nutritional yeast, and sunflower seeds, adjusting oil and salt amount as needed. I had some on toast, and the rest I turned into a pasta salad with some of my beloved sourdough radiatori pasta (my all time favourite shape, and a delicious type of dried pasta). I mixed in a little bit of greek yogurt, cherry tomatoes, chopped olives and some macedonian feta. I recently bought some green olives stuffed with preserved lemon that I’m not savoring at all and the’ll be gone in a few days, and a reminder that I should really preserve some lemons!

It’s the time of the year where I’ve nearly stopped making hot coffee in the morning. Instead I always have a bottle of cold brew prepped in the fridge that I make a new batch of every few days. I use the hario bottle, which has a great little infusion system and you can still pour out of it like a regular bottle while it continues to infuse. I’ve been using this every summer for years <3 its a real summertime mvp.

A nice way to shake things up is simply to just add a few spices. I’ve put a bit of crushed cinnamon stick, cardamom, some chai masala from diaspora, or a little bit of vanilla extract. When I’m in the mood for something a bit creamy, I’ll froth up a bit of whipping cream to just a nice pourable consistency. It adds a little bit of softness to a stark cold glass of cold brew some mornings.

Special shoutout to the Ditch Cafe in the town I live in where I can get a cold brew with cold foam when I need to get out of the house or I’m out of coffee at home, AND to make things even better they are making a cherry infused cold brew with cherry cold foam, that tops any coffee I’m making at home <3

I’m going to make a real honest effort to be here more, and share more with you all my beloved computer angel readers. Looking ahead, I’m feeling inspired in the kitchen as I become more and more surrounded by delicious and fresh produce. And don’t worry, I am still spending lots of time on the computer and more on that soon.

Spring this, spring that! It may or may not feel like spring where you are, but it does where I am. Flowers are popping up at speeds I can’t even believe, the seeds I’ve planted in my garden are sprouting, and I wake up to a cacophony of birds on a daily basis (love!).

Here I am writing about the computer, which may feel a little counter-intuitive as I have been spending a lot more time outside and really basking in the occasional t-shirt weather days we’ve been having in the Okanagan. But I do also spend a lot of time on the computer, and I really recognize the importance of an organized environment both IRL and online. If a space is unorganized, it will be harder to keep clean, especially when the days get warmer and I want to spend every non-working hour outside enjoying the sun. Plus, I work a computer job so my sanity does rely on having a relatively tidy space and I also spend a lot of time on my computer recreationally, ie. organizing projects in anytype, browsing pinterest, writing substacks, etc. Knowing where to put thoughts down and seeing my delightfully designed space sparks inspiration and joy and who wouldn’t want that!

Spring brings a lot of energizing feelings and I’ve found myself tending to my digital space so much more lately, cleaning out old projects and starting new ones. I’ve recently become someone who keeps a physical planner as I often feel the urge to write something down physically (I’ve stopped covering my desk in sticky notes which is great) but my planner is doesn’t store it all — many things I feel I need to keep digitally. And of course, the content of my digital space is with me anywhere on my phone & ipad, I can move things around, add links, share it, re-organize it, etc.

I’ve wanted to do a deep dive into my beloved app Anytype for a long time, and this isn’t going to be a comprehensive tutorial but just an overview of how I keep things organized and structured. Anytype is very similar to Notion, but I find the design is cleaner and simpler, and as Notion becomes more and more of a corporate tool (very powerful, i still use it for work) I find the interface of Anytype more peaceful and suitable for my personal needs. Anything I write about here is easily translatable to Notion if that’s your preference.

One of the biggest challenges of getting started with Anytype or Notion is the vast, empty space you start with and endless solutions. Scattered around the internet and within these tools you’ll find templates and dashboards you can duplicate into your space, but I find that not only is the PARA system simple, but building your space from the ground up will set you on an empowered path to keep improving it. I don’t claim to be an expert here, I actually have not read any of Tiago Forte’s books!

The beauty of these digital workspaces is that they are ever-evolving, growing with you as your life changes. I get surges of inspiration, and periods of stillness where I don’t touch anything for weeks at a time, that’s life.

The basis of the PARA method is that everything fits within these 4 buckets. Projects are all things time based, things / projects that will eventually complete, and be sent into the archive. At any given time I might have a lot of projects, but I set a filter on the ones I’m actively using so that only projects tagged “focus” appear in my sidebar. Areas are well, areas of focus in your life. These pages tend to be more like a dumping ground I periodically update and clean up as they’re more evergreen than a project. I have an area for knitting, travel, food, health, admin things, topics i’m researching, etc. Resources are things that I’ll come back to periodically but I don’t engage with on a daily basis. Things like my clothing measurements so when I’m buying clothes online I can refer back to, gift idea lists, admin info, etc. Lastly, is Archive, where projects & areas go when they’re no longer needed.

My one deviation from this system is notes. I have a set called Notes, where I can quickly dump something if I need to. If I’m on the go, ill make a note on my phone and put it somewhere more suitable later. Most of my notes are work to-dos, random lists, etc. The truth is, some of these notes could definitely fit into Areas, but I find them generally to not be things I’ll come back to and if I really need to, I can move a note into a Project or Area.

Here is a peek at what my personal space looks like at this moment in time. My projects are ever changing, but right now I have a trip home coming up, I’ve recently started a garden, some home renovations coming up, I've been making micro-notes on a possible cookbook since the dawn of time, and blurred is a top secret project I’ve been thinking about that will take me a long time to bring to completion since I have to learn an entirely new skill in order to do so!

refresh your desktop

A much more lightweight way to clean things up is to refresh + organize folders. Original computer angel subscribers may remember last year when I released a batch of flowers to replace the generic folder icons on your computer (no hate to the classic apple folder) but we do have free will to spark a semblance of joy by changing folder icons, even for boring and soul-less things like documents and work! Inspired by the fact that things are growing and I’m starting to dream about biting into a juicy peach on a hot summer day this batch is very fruity, with a couple veggies <3 It takes only a couple minutes to change the icons on the 6 folders I keep on my desktop but it makes such a difference, it almost makes me want to put things in them more! Heres a link to the post where I have notes on how to actually implement these if you need.

Next up on my list of frivolous to-dos is to change all my icons in anytype, but that’s a project for later.

clean your downloads folder + empty your trash

Ok, i’m not about to peer pressure you into cleaning up your desktop, because I completely understand what an overwhelming process that could be for many individuals, no desktop shame. I’m literally a designer and I take about 30 screenshots a day. Of course I am a firm believer in having folders for every type of file you often use on your desktop so you can avoid getting to chaos land in the first place, but cleaning these high use areas is a nice piece of low hanging fruit.

Clean out your downloads folder, or even just toss a handful of no longer needed files into your trash and clear it out. For me, my downloads folder gets out of hand pretty fast. Move important things you want to save to their respective homes and delete the rest, maybe clean up a couple trashy files from your desktop while you’re at it and then reward yourself with the satisfying empty, sound on <3

It almost feels like spring, and the weather where I am has made a pretty quick jump from just a couple weeks ago there was snow and I was sledding on the mountain and now I feel like I’m so close to reading outside in the sun weather. Plants are starting to come back to life and I feel like I am too! I’ve felt a surge of inspiration as I’ve been planning what I’m going to try to grow in the garden this year which has me thinking a lot more about food, not that I’m not usually thinking about food, in some capacity <3. In my last post I asked you all what you wanted more, and the winner was food. Music to my ears!

I currently live in a tiny home, so my kitchen space is limited but after many months of settling in, the small space feels a lot less small. I am actually enjoying everything being in arms reach and I’m starting to really fall in love with my little kitchen, partially because I know it will only improve with time as we continue to work on our space. Because of my limited counter space, I’ve been making less big extravagant meals and and focusing more on making components that I can mix and match, but as always, it has to be delicious or it’s out. The things below are foods and drinks I’ve been making — on repeat.

to drink

salty lemon water (+ vinegar)

Starting off with drinks, this is the first thing I consume every day. At least, every day this last few weeks that is — and I hate to be this girl, but I do feel a lot better when coffee isn’t the first thing to enter my body in the morning. Last summer I started making a crazy concoction of lemon juice, zest, lots of salt, vinegar, and at times even blending some sea buckthorn berries into the mix, then freezing it into convenient cubes that I could drop into my hot water in the morning. This pre-coffee ritual joins me while i either do morning pages (i’m back on this week!!) and all the way through to when I cook breakfast. After I eat, I rinse out my cup and make my first coffee. Right now, I’m simply cutting a slice or two of lemon, a big pinch or two of salt and splash of vinegar go into my hot water and voila. I’m an acid girl so I literally love this, maybe you will too. It can be more mild or more vibrant depending on how much acid + salt you add.

We’ve recently converted to be an exclusively loose-leaf tea household. I’m still working my way though some stray tea bags, but in an effort to reduce microplastics, its actually proving to be a very inspiring and fun journey. Our current setup is this OXO tea strainer which fits perfectly in this hario carafe, as well as in a single mug for a cup of tea. The little lid to close it up and keep it hot is perfect. I’m also in a “splash of cream” phase so if I’m having a tea that’s hospitable to adding a splash of cream, I might just do it.

It’s not all hot drink central over here! The sunny afternoons have me accepting a fridge-temp cold-brewed tea. In an effort to get some extra hydration I created a delightful juicy drink composed of cold brewed hibiscus, mint & eucalyptus tea, mixed with 1/4 of a liquid IV packet (or electrolyte of your choosing). Strawberry mixed with the hibiscus & mint was a delightful combo. Last night I cracked open a la croix (strawberry peach) and mixed it with a bit of liquid iv powder & some fresh passionfruit and it was so good.

bean salad!!!

In an effort to get more beans into my diet I’ve been making the infamous dense bean salad which serves as an incredible lunch or quick snack when my low blood sugar pushes me towards a carb. It also helps me complete my bean servings in dr gregor’s daily dozen app that I use off and on for fun, mainly when I’m eating really well just to boost my confidence that I’m eating lots of good whole foods lol. I’ve made two bean salads this week, as documented below, but I encourage you to get creative! I feel like I’m just at the start of my bean salad journey even though I’ve made these before, but I have lots of ideas brewing (-:

It’s really so, so easy. Chop up a decent amount of veg & a liberal amount of herbs, rinse a couple cans of beans, and dress it all up with the condiments of your choosing, lots of olive oil and salt. I’ve been doing a greek yogurt, lemon juice, olive oil based dressing lately, but the last batch I made I immersion blended some oil, yogurt, vinegar & macedonian feta + herbs into a creamy light green sauce, but combine something rich & fatty + something acidic and you’ll be good to go. Experimenting is fun!

roasted potatoes

roasting potatoes is something I genuinely love to do. I’ll pop on a podcast or tv show and just peel & chop away. put a big glug of olive oil on some peeled & diced russets, salt them & roast in my little toaster oven on the convection setting. When they’re closer to being done, I’ll toss some extra seasonings on them like some chillies, zataar, sumac, pepper, etc. Usually a little tray of these won’t last 20 minutes between cody and I but I usually try to stash some away for breakfast the next morning. I also find that roasting potatoes is a good gateway to roasting other veggies you need to use up since the oven is already pre-heated, so I’ll take a look at and see if there are any lonely or sad looking veg I have on hand that might want a little roast. For me this is often beets, broccoli, brussels sprouts, green beans, sweet potato, etc.

Most of the time we just eat the freshly roasted veg as is, but they frequently find their way into my breakfasts, or into a little tortilla with some herbs & something creamy + a little hot sauce, or into a more robust dinner bowl with other roasted veggies and a grain.

radish + cucumber tzadziki

This is another staple in the house, and it’s one I find that helps get us to eat more veggies. I’ll often keep pre-sliced carrot sticks in water in the fridge, so it’s easy to grab a few and eat them with some tzadziki or hummus. Over the years, I’ve found that I don’t really care about taking ALL the moisture out of the cucumber so these days I usually just shred it up and toss it in a fine mesh strainer and give it a little salt and let it sit while I prep everything else. Recently I’ve been adding some shredded radishes into the mix as well, which adds a little spice. I don’t usually measure anything when I make tzadziki, but roughly I’ll use a big tub of the high protein siggis greek yogurt, one large cucumber, a generous amount of garlic cloves and fresh dill, and then a liberal amount of olive oil, salt and pepper. It’s obviously a great dip, I’ll use it as the creamy base under my tofu scramble in the mornings, add a dollop on some roasted veggies, or on a sweet potato with a pat of butter and some salt & pepper. Works nicely under some thinly sliced veggies on a piece of crispy sourdough toast as well.

Time and time again I completely forget about the magic of carrot salad. Don’t get me wrong, I do love carrots - but spicing them up (literally) with acid + heat + salt is a game changer for me. I would have absolutely demolished this batch of carrot salad if it wasn’t for the 2 spicy green peppers I put into this one so i had to eat it in small bites with water in between, a little too spicy for me! Its not rocket science. shred some carrots, toss some sesame oil, rice vinegar, a splash of soy sauce, a couple cloves of garlic minced or pressed, some chillies, perhaps an herb or two, and lastly some sesame seeds. There are many variations on a carrot salad, this is just one of them.

Don’t fret! I’m not talking dairy yogurt + fruit here, if you’re on the same internet as me you may have been educated on the different types of enzymes that fruit and dairy need to break down, and they don’t mix well. I recently found some of the new lemon flavoured Yoggu and I had to try. I have some Graza granola or “grazola” that I got over the holidays that I completely forgot about until the other day, and I found some passionfruit over the weekend when I was out shopping. They all found themselves in a delightful little granola yogurt bowl that I couldn’t put down.

and lastly, herbs!!!

I eat a lot of herbs. They are not only SO good and make everything taste so much better but they’re also very good for you. Until later in the season and my herb garden comes to life, I’m buying store bought herbs. In a previous time in life, herbs would sit unused in my fridge after being bought for a recipe and go to waste, but I’ve both now cracked the code to keeping them fresh for a long time, and making sure I actually eat them all before they go bad. Of course, the key here is to buy herbs that you’ll actually eat on a number of dishes and not just for a single recipe, but theres a few things i’ve been doing that’s amplified the ease at which i use herbs, and also how long they stay in my fridge without going bad.

First, clean them: when you get those herbs home from the store is to give them a quick clean. A simple rinse under cold water will do just fine. I’ll shake them off as much as I can and quickly dry them on a dish towel.

Next, wrap them up in their blankets: Lay them all out on a few paper towels, trying my best to spread them apart so they’re not crowded. Then, I’ll wrap it all up like a little burrito and in it goes into the big plastic bag that lives in my fridge with all my other herb bundles. The bag doesn’t close, and that doesn’t seem to matter.

Lastly, prep some herbs! The key to actually using herbs on everything? Prep! I’ll pull of a bit of parsley, cilantro & green onions, sometimes dill or mint and chop them up to live in a little container that I’ll put on anything. It helps to broaden your mind and try new food + herb combinations, but something about the blend is really delightful.

Its been quite a while, I wasn’t intending to take this long of a break, or really a break at all, and to be quite honest I’ve been contemplating and attempting my return for months, and nothing felt quite right. Distance from substack has made coming back a lot harder, but I keep reminding myself — it's not that serious!!!!

Its been a weird week, also a weird month, and weird year. The world is feeling like it's at peak chaos. My environment has changed a lot in the last 6 months, I now live in a teeny tiny town, I am operating out of a mini-kitchen and tiny space, surrounded by mountains and lakes. Prospects for the future (at least in my own little world) feel abundant and I am embracing the lack of "things to do" that the little town we live in has to offer and where I can focus my attention elsewhere. Not that I ever feel a lack of things i should do, but the difference between living in one of the most culturally-rich cities in canada and a small town in British Columbia is not small. Right now I feel called to creation through textiles, cooking, writing things down with my hands & hopefully once the weather gets warmer, starting a garden and splashing around in natural bodies of water!!

In lieu of a very concise topic for this entry, I'm going to keep it short and simple and just share what I've been focusing on & areas of life that are inspiring me. In the coming months, I would like to do some serious contemplation about what this space is for me, what the future might look like, and what I truly want to share. I am sensing a re-brand, or a re-alignment, but that might just be my designer urge to constantly reinvent the image of myself on the internet. I find myself in an all-to-common paralysis of choice. I am waiting for a call to action, but reminding myself that I have to continue creating in order to continue feeling inspired and evolving. Sitting, waiting, & thinking don’t get us too far when all we want to do is actually do.

I’ve embarked on a very non-computer angel journey of using a hobinichi techo instead of a digital app. I'm obsessed, I love it. It’s not at all like my schedule is very busy these days so it's not as much a planner for me (I still need to use a digital calendar for calls + appointments) but more a place to keep track of things — feelings, a mini journal, tasks, ideas, things I want remember, etc. I am absolutely in love with the structure, the design, the feeling of the paper, and the little quotes at the bottom of each spread. I'm so glad I love it because I spent almost $100 (canadian) on this stack of bound paper! In a flurry of new year energy, I tried to start doing morning pages again but especially at this time of the year, I can’t get it to stick. Instead, I use the body of each daily page to mini journal throughout the day, or whenever I have a thought. It doesn't get quite as deep, but it's enough space. I feel better connected to the passing of time, and I love having a reference of when things happened, when I had certain thoughts and ideas. I have a feeling this will stick, but time will tell

I'm knitting! as much as I possibly can! I'm thinking of all the patterns I want to knit, and I'm dreaming of all the things I want to create. I found a very cute fabric and I took out my sewing machine for the first time in many years, the same one I’ve had since I was a kid and made us some new curtains. Over the holidays I freaked it and knit a few winter accessories for myself like a pair of cozy fingerless gloves and a really, really soft balaclava. I just finished making cody a pair of tabi mittens, and now I'm embarking on making this sweater for myself in a dreamy brown (the color of the year for me) and god I want to knit a million other things but I'm taking one step at a time and the nearest (good) yarn store is 1.5 hours away so that level of separation from me and the yarn store is good. I hope I can finish the sweater while it's still cold enough that I want to wear it. Be my friend on Ravelry! I love this cute little app. Not everything needs to be sleek and look like it was designed in 2025.

I'm pinning pinning pinning! Notably, to sunny home (cody and I’s shared home inspiration board), my (new) garden board, and to the board I use to inspire the ways I nourish myself with food (happy healthy eating). Right now, we live in a very tiny space with a lot of potential, and many possible home projects and renovations on the horizon. It's a fun time to dream, plan, and try my best to manifest the sanctuary I have in my brain. I’m pinning in an aspirational way — you’ll find completely unrealistic ideas on my garden board and homes I could only dream of in sunny home. When possible, I try to spend time scrolling on pinterest or are.na instead of social media, especially now as things in the world feel truly and deeply uncertain and unstable. In the spring, I'm embarking on a new adventure to use some space to start a garden, as for the first time in my life I'm surrounded by ample space and an abundance of resources and help from family. When my insatiable craving for knitting dwindles in the warmer months, perhaps I’ll have something else to keep me busy and more reasons to be outside.

To be fully transparent, I am doing plenty of less mindful things too, like scrolling tik tok, watching RHONY & old seasons of survivor. Its all about balance.

This entry of internet pearls felt like a moment of synchronicity, a big theme in the artist's way that both challenged me and has given me lasting delight since I completed it. As I foraged for links around the internet for a new edition of internet pearls this week, I started to observe a theme in what I was discovering (or perhaps what I was seeking out). As links accumulated and the bones of this entry came to life, I found myself re-visiting the icons that make my computer feel like home and thought it would be a good time to share some with my little community here (-: On a walk this weekend, I found myself on an impromptu artist date, something I did a lot of during the artists way and certainly always did long before, but the idea adds a bit of extra sweetness to anything I might once have classified as an artist date, any activity I do alone, just for me based purely on desire. My crispy morning walk around the park, documenting flowers for my computer folders certainly felt like one!

I'm coming to your inbox on this lovely monday with a very food + drink related entry today, and even though i am indeed in a cooking draught, I’m still feeding myself with things that taste great! all is well.

Perhaps you are feeling refreshed as the seasons change! Smelling barbecues at the park and remembering what it feels like to be damp and sticky from heat and humidity. It’s easy & fun to romanticize the summer, and at the same time I know in a few months I will certainly be desperate to put on a hoodie and a pair of pants on a cool day. As i soak up the last summer before we move across the country (again) I’m focusing on only what matters most and I feel called to + of course what i’ve signed myself up for (a lot of freelance work outside of my 9-5… it always seems like a good idea in the moment). My lack of substack activity is simply a reflection of my lack of time and clarity on what might actually matter to or resonate with the readers of this little baby I call computer angel.

In the daze of extremely high levels of computer time + busyness (at least i love my job!) our little household has been lacking the inspiration and time to prioritize trying new recipes or even simply plan what we are going to eat, which has me leaning extra on default modular cooking that doesn’t follow a recipe, because just like my long standing hyper-fixation breakfast, it just come together with a few core ingredients and whatever else is in the fridge fills the gaps.

a theme here is: mornings

Lately my mornings begin with a few things that it didn’t a number of months ago — one being my morning pages (if you’ve spent some time with me lately you might have heard me babble about how i would recommend it to literally anyone) but another is simply an ice cube thats's made something that felt both previously undesirable and unachievable into something effortless — and that is, consuming something other than coffee right after I wake up. I don't even know if this change has really had any impacts on how i feel but we're simply running with something new because it's actually very nice and i feel like it can't be bad, that's pretty much it.

Never thought it could be me but each morning before I sit down to do my little writing I add some hot water to my mug with one special ice cube. I made this ice cube for the first time about a month ago in a sudden urge to use a surplus of lemons and it's unleashed my fixation with freezing ice cubes of all sorts of things and I feel like I have only scratched the surface. I'm very much in an ice cube phase! it's perfect for the changing season, and really proving it's worth in the humid + hot montreal summer and heat waves! and even on the muggy thunderstorm & rainy days.

The ice cube in question — I'll get to the point here! It contains simply: lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, grated ginger, lemon zest, salt & water. Once it's in my favourite mug it melts quickly and it's delightful, tangy, comforting, and subtle-y salty. I want to add a disclaimer here that this if for the acid lovers, it may not be for everyone. That being said, I feel like you could simply dilute them with extra water. For a more subtle but equally as enjoyable cold drink, pop one of these in a cup of ice water! I've been borderline addicted to this during hot days when I'm sitting on the patio despite the fact that we have air conditioning and i could be a desirable temperature at my desk, but I love the heat sometimes.

These are on my weekly rotation of ice cube production, along side regular cubes, cold brew, and tart cherry juice cubes. Hibiscus and some herb experiments are up next. I hope you're thinking of all the things you can freeze in ice cubes! You don't need to buy another ice cube tray but this is the one that we have, I absolutely love it and have never had an ice tray I've actually loved. I shield my eyes from anyone trying to sell me some special tray on tiktok.

I’m also in a cold brew phase and I use this funky add-on for my aeropress and after I finish breakfast I’ll pour myself a little cup of cold brew, with a few cold brew ice cubes so it doesn’t dilute. perfection!

Do most people eat variations on the same thing for seemingly their entire life? (Ive since googled this, seems common). I've asked myself this question a lot as sometimes I start to judge myself for eating the same thing day after day but it's 1. delicious 2. I love it and 3. it’s good for me and thats simply all that matters. As a hypoglycaemic girl my beloved carbohydrate heavy meals like bagels (i’m really daydreaming of something in particular right now iykyk) are not a great option because unless we're packing tons of protein into it I WILL be hungry for my next meal in under a two hours which isn't very convenient.

I ebb and flow with my relationship to eggs (don’t we all) so sometimes this becomes tofu scramble with the same other components + some spices. I’ve legitimately been eating some variation of this since high school with small periods of time when i’ve tried to switch things up, but I always come back to this. Because I make this every day, ingredients also rotate through depending on what I have in the fridge but the only way I can describe it is through this infographic that i had a lot of fun making. Sometimes i really love being a designer <3

process goes like this: chop veggies, sautee veggies, set aside, scramble egg, heat tortilla, and put everything on. Right now the tortillas im using are far too small for the things i’m putting inside them so it kind of ends up like a bit of an overfilled taco.

1. never really gets old because its always a little different

2. keeps me feeling good for a sustained time

3. includes a lot of healthy things

4. does pretty much hinge on a good quality tortillas and I'll find them anywhere I live. But I have a really really strong bond with these tortillas in montreal and I'm genuinely heartbroken thinking about moving across the country in the fall and no longer having access to them. If any readers know of good flour tortillas in the okanagan I will drive anywhere in my future car in my future life.

Sometimes when i’m struggling to craft up something to eat, a big fridge salad will do. I almost always have some form of lettuce, cucumbers, something else crunchy like radishes or cabbage or carrots and it always just comes together. Nothing will unleash your inner salad chef more than a mandolin/benrinner. Some of the best salads have tons of ingredients and unless you're in the mood to do some meditative slicing, you aren’t going to get salads quite like these. This includes pasta salad, and it's definitely that time of year! Personally I have and love this one — it's a classic, and includes a couple different blade options for shredding. It's powerful, I've had it for a years, and I think it will be with me for a very long time. The blades are replaceable and I also happen to find the tool it's self, very beautiful.

on that note — what does the future hold for computer angel?

I struggle to write sometimes a lot of the time because I don’t know whether to write more about things i’m consuming or things i’m doing on the computer so I’m simply just sharing what feels right. This all started as an experiment with myself as I have never thought of myself as a writer and I still barely do even though I write a lot every day — Anyways. These days i’m finding the best time for my writing is being just a wee bit zooted and when i’m up way too late staring at a screen, but you know I love and respect my mindful screen time! I use an app called f.lux to write when I want to cause minimal disruption to my circadian rhythm during the hours I should really be sleeping.

Perhaps in 6 months time this will simply be a food blog and perhaps ill have to re-brand, seems likely, and not a problem. I once ran a food instagram but it died because I held myself to photographing everything in a perfectly centred circle bowl or plate on a colored background and it was unsustainable.

This week has been full of ups and minor downs - I started the week on a high note, with a burst of energy [period over] ready to girl boss my way through the week - and I did just that. Feeling incredibly blessed by the eternal feelings of the long weekend and in an attempt to run a sort of beta test with myself - I felt compelled to re-kindle my relationship with the "notion dashboard" — but focused specifically on eating based on my menstrual cycle. Despite this urge to move towards a more freakishly organized + more productive version of myself, I’ve also recently become more aware of a healthy aversion to over analyzing my productivity and improvement culture, because the last thing I need is a constant feeling like I need to change myself, but also - its good to always be growing and getting better? Whatever, I’m just trying to strike a balance. As I browse my extremely un-curated youtube homepage that serves me a lot of nerdy computer productivity content I consciously avoid things that make me feel things like "I don’t possibly need to add this additional layer of pressure on myself to be better".

Instead I feel drawn to improve small parts of my life that feel like essential components — eating and movement. The added layer of complexity that lays in these areas is that I am a woman, and I Do Not feel the same all month and in fact as I have began paying more attention to where I'm at in my cycle, I’m noticing very real patterns of ebbs and flows in my energy and mood, feelings and more, that I feel almost embarrassed to be only now really taking note of and paying attention to at 28 years of life. Regardless — I've been setting intentions to push myself towards better foods to eat or what seeds to add to my bird mix to align better with my cycle, and perhaps achieve more of a

But I could take this intention to another level. I had, in the last few days came across what felt like a cluster of recipes on instagram excited me and also felt conveniently very healthy! The real recipe for success was that this surge of inspiration came after I had my nightly dose of weed that both speeds things up, and slows other things down in this little brain of mine. It started off very simple, just getting some core components down, because it has to start somewhere. At this point this was just a one-off note for the week, but with the right commitment and time this could be a support for me in the future, which is where it evolved.

Following this initial burst of energy, I started filling a new page intended to guide me for the week, serving as both a check-list of what to prep, and a reminder of what i've prepared for myself, what I should buy this week, and where I can turn when I am feeling hungry + don't want to think too much ← This is the goal! It's so exhausting to think of things to eat every day, and I'm not even counting my hyper-fixation breakfast because thats dialled tuned and perfected on auto-pilot to the point that I’m convinced I could prepare myself the most insane tofu scramble breakfast burrito with so many ingredients in my sleep, I could go on. Breakfast aside, what plagues me and I assume most of us is how exhausting it can be to think of how to eat or what to eat every single day - sometimes I feel I’m over thinking this, especially when the internet shouts a lot of food related content at this girl, unsurprisingly. This gets even harder when you're:

1. trying not to eat out all the time so you have to cook yourself

2. you cant spend a million dollars on healthy pre-prepared food

3. you are a woman and there are different things you are supposed to eat depending on the time of the month, and avoid.

4. you actually enjoy the ritual of cooking and feeding yourself

5. you cook for / with others in your household

I felt compelled to share with you the fruits of my computer labor, I'll call this version 0.0.1. Over the week, I filled this up with ideas and notes, and it’s by no means an actual Meal Plan with here’s what I’m eating each day because that’s a level of planning that I am not currently doing, this is simply a place I turn to when I cook.

I’ll dig into the details for just a moment here. I started with intentions at the top - and I eventually added my plan for working out since this felt like a good place to keep it. I moved prep tasks over to the right as I had completed a lot of these as I first used this, and then listed off things I had readily available. I sometimes find it helpful to simply take stock of things you don’t want to forget to use. Frozen things apply here too, because I’m not trying to max out my freezer with stuff that will eventually get lost and thrown out. If you’re anything like me and the fridge becomes a sea of containers with random shit, it’s a helpful reminder for things like “I have pre-blanched broccoli in there” and I’m a tiny bit less likely to let it rot away because I forgot about it.

In the moment, while setting up all of this, I have thoughts that tell me that this is fruitless, I will not come back to this later this week, I am simply organizing temporary objects that will eventually get deleted and go into the ether because I’ve been here before, but with a whole lot less intention, and usually it’s filled with tasks that burden my brain and don’t feel like a place that holds and supports me as gently as this does.

I am really happy to report that I did in fact come back to this list, and it did evolve from just a list of prep tasks and a note about what foods to shoot for into something that functioned very well as I hit my lowest point of the week when I knocked over a lamp and sliced my finger and bled A Lot, and and my uneducated ass put dry gauze on it only to rip it open when I later got chocolate from my late night snack on the bandage. I have since learned better wound wrapping practices, and my cut is now fine and on the road to healing, but for two days I found myself 1. Anxious that I might need to seek medical assistance but I felt an aversion to that and 2. I’m currently alone, cody is on vacation and 3. I was functioning with 25% less hands as I could still use most of my left hand but had to avoid flexing or bending my pinky. Its shockingly hard (and gross) to chop vegetables with a bandaged finger but my driving force was what I set up for myself. I had prepped veggies in the fridge, sauce I made the day before, cooked rice, and everything came together effortlessly in a low blood sugar haze after not eating for the second half of the day, and that is exactly when I experienced the fruits of my labour.

And now, as a treat - I share with you a couple of the things (I suppose you could call these recipes) I made this week that brought me a lot of joy. Small stuff here, we’re not breaking new ground, just eating.

collecting inspiration

Food is a sweet little inspiration for me. During my weeks of living as a solo girl for a few weeks while my boyfriend was away for work, I found myself ebbing and flowing between things reminiscent of girl dinner, to meals that i cant remember spending that much time on for quite a while. The other day I made myself an appetizer with the leftover components of my sandwich, which felt really magical. Treat yourself to creating things that feel like they come from a restaurant, I highly recommend it. Add extra butter or olive oil, salt things at every stage - pull out 20 things from your fridge and pantry and make a mess using just a dash of this and tiny bit of that, slow down (or speed up) and don’t cut corners or skip add-ins and garnish. Its meditative. Put some nice music on, and an apron if you have one will really pull together the whole vibe. This week, i am collecting inspiration of beautiful food as a mindful activity. Treat yourself to something beautiful & consumable this week! For me it was a few watermelon radishes that I slice with incredible joy and a beautiful dinner at fleurs et cadeaux with Cody. I highly suggest clicking the link and looking at their website, the dancing nigiri might make you smile. When I am seeking inspiration and I’m not spending $$$ on eating out, I turn to pinterest & are.na, obviously. beloved tools for anyone with a visual brain.

my happy little digital home (anytype)

I always like to have a space on my computer that is just for me - its a space where I save and document things, take notes, write, and of course work on this thing that you’re reading right now. I’m spending even more time here lately, and I love it. For a long time the space I used was created in Notion, but since then a shiny new (very similar but slightly different) app came along called Anytype, that I’ve been using for quite a while and in the same way that I found I could continuously fall in love with Notion after a clean up or reset of my structure, the same goes for Anytype - its a digital home that adds solace to my computer time, that I tend to like my own little digital garden. It grows with me and supports me wherever I need. These are some things that I keep here.

Right now, as I am teaching myself how to properly nourish myself for the different phases of my cycle as a woman, I've been using this place to document what changes I might notice in my body, what foods I may want to focus on eating more of, what types of movement will best support me. Of course eventually I will have all of this downloaded into my brain but for now, I come here every few days as a reminder. having green tea instead of my second coffee

this is Not a new concept and while i really haven’t researched why I might want to limit my caffeine intake, nor do I have an issue regulating my caffeine intake, i simply have been drawn back to loose leaf tea as a second caffeine source for me, mid day. It might benefit me to switch the tea to the morning and coffee to the evening (but i don’t care to do so). My go-to teas are typically Genmaicha, Sencha and Matcha. Making a pot of tea and picking a tiny tea cup, the act of re-filling my baby mug slows me down much more than my mug of coffee that I sip on slowly while hot and then chug when it becomes room temp.

Nothing, and I mean nothing makes me feel like I’m embodying a bird at my desk, and I love it. Introducing bird mix! This can be more birdy or more human snack, depending on your ingredients and ratios. This came out of my attempt to start seed cycling, so I made a mixture of mainly seeds but also some fun extras like dried fruit and coconut flakes. My original intent was to use it as a topper for yogurt or oatmeal but I actually just ended up leaving a spoon next to the jar and eating a couple spoonfuls each day. I now have a new practice of bringing a small bowl of treats to my desk, often my go-to when my day is busy and I desperately need to raise my blood sugar. sometimes I forget to take my vitamins in the morning so ill toss those into the mix as well, but make sure to take them first so you don’t accidentally eat them. I bit open a dayquil once in middle school and it was the worst tasting thing I’ve ever experienced. Not that dayquil is in my morning vitamin rotation but I think you get my point.

Here are some ideas for your next bird mix, they get seedier and weirder on the right side. vitamins are arbitrarily placed in the graphic, because we don’t chew those.

What i do feel "qualified" to speak on is the silly little things i do on the computer, and off the computer of course. but I spend A Lot of time on my computer, for both work and for non - work, or things that feel like a blend of work and play (As a designer, doing design for yourself and only yourself is a great form of play!)

Whilst I click away at this little (big and powerful) device of mine i've come to form a deep connection with so many digital tools - and analog ones of course, and those that know me know food lies close to my heart and is the source of much of my inspiration, so theres no doubt that will infuse it's way into this at some point. I plan to leave you with some things I find interesting or fun or happy for this little brain of mine.

I might tell you nerdy things like how I organize the files on my computer, or turn the icons on my desktop into what im currently reffering to as "items".
